After Facebook's trial, many social media platforms and company websites have changed their privacy settings and have notified customers about the changes. Taking the time to check and manage these settings properly is incredibly important. Each social media platform has their own set of privacy settings, so check each individually to make sure that you are not allowing just anyone to view your profile.
Facebook
Facebook has four general settings that allow you to choose what kind of audience can view your posts. These include Public, Friends Only, Custom, and Only Me. You can choose these general options in the "Privacy Settings & Tools" option or in the "Update Status" field.
When you are deciding on your privacy settings, ask yourself, "Who do I want to see my posts, who do I want to allow to see my contact information, and who should be allowed to look me up."
Twitter
Twitter allows you to have a private account, which only allows users approved by you to see your tweets. You can also choose a "Protect My Tweets" option in your privacy settings which gives additional login verification options.
Instagram
Instagram users can choose the "Posts are Private" setting in their Profile Settings. This option allows only approved viewers to see your posts and location.
SnapChat
By default, users can only send or receive photos and videos to contacts who you have approved or you have asked to be friends with. There are two other privacy settings that have been added recently to improve security. You can choose more specifically who is allowed to send you content and who can view your "Snap Story."
Even with these new and improved privacy options, nothing on the Internet is truly private. Monitoring your privacy settings is only one precaution in making sure that your personal information is not violated.
