Plan Ahead
Plan ahead before leaving the house for work. Listen to the weather forecast. Pay close attention to freezing temperatures. Some weather channels include the actual temperature and “feels like” temperature which includes the wind chill. Don’t be tricked by the sun! It can still be very cold even when the sun is out. Rely on the weather forecast instead of peeking out the window. Weather is always subject to change so always double check right before leaving.
Dress Warm
Remember to dress warm during winter. Wear loose-fitting and light weight clothing so it is easier to remove. Your body heat escapes quickly from your head, especially your ears, wear a hat and scarf. Wear waterproof jackets, with a wind shield, and waterproof shoes. It is important to stay dry. Wet clothing reduces the body temperature significantly. Remove layers if they make you sweat. Make sure to dry off before heading out into the cold.
Be Cautious
Be aware of serious health conditions like frostbite and hyperthermia and what signs to look for. Always try to protect yourself first and know cautionary signs. Frostbite is a serious condition where the layers of skin and tissue are frozen. Look for signs of numbing and tingling on the tips of your toes and fingers. Severe cases of frostbite causes skin to turn white and waxy. If this does occur do not rub or massage affected areas. Warm them gradually, avoid using hot water, but use a heater. Hyperthermia is an extreme cold that can worsen to a life-threatening condition, always seek medical attention and stay indoors.
Be cautious, dress warm and plan ahead!
