The Halloween season can be a lot of fun – kids running around dressed as tiny pumpkins and superheroes; haunted houses; pumpkin picking and trick-or-treating. With all of the activities surrounding Halloween it is important that we exercise caution and make sure the holiday doesn’t turn into a nightmare.
1. Stay away from unwrapped candy and treats
Don’t take any chances with unwrapped treats in the trick-or-treating bowl. Not only is it unsafe to take these from strangers, but just think how many other kids are sticking their hands into the bowl.
2. Be cautious if you are sending your kids out on their own
Your kids may want to be out with their friends without being escorted by their parents. Because it gets darker earlier, it’s not a bad idea to make sure that at least one parent is out with the kids. Have fun with it –dress up with the kids – and keep them safe!
3. Watch out for kids crossing and running into the streets
As you are drive around town, be cautious of kids running across the street. Darker costumes may be hard to pick out. So drive slower - just in case.
4. Be careful pulling out of driveways
Kids will be running down the sidewalks to get to the next house. Get out of your car and look around before pulling out of your driveway. Back up slowly to make sure you can see if any kids are approaching.
5. Make sure your kids’ costumes fit properly
We know you are trying to use homemade or hand-me-down costumes for your kids – but make sure they don’t drag on the ground. This could cause kids to trip and get hurt. Also - watch out for long tails, pieces that can get caught easily, and masks that make it hard to breathe.
6. Test makeup before covering your whole face
If you are planning on painting your face or your kids’ faces, make sure you purchase a safe makeup and test it on a small part of your skin before applying it to your face. This is to test for any sensitivity or reaction your skin may have to the chemicals.
Have a fun & safe Halloween…
…and don’t be this guy
